The Fusil Porfirio Diaz Sistema Mondragón Model 1908, referred to simply as the Mondragón M1908, is a gas-operated self-loading rifle originally designed by Manuel Mondragón, a general in the Mexican Army. The most unique feature of the rifle was the ability to switch the rifle between semi-automatic and bolt action operation, which was cutting-edge for an infantry rifle designed at the turn of the 20th century. This was accomplished through a latch on the bolt handle that connected the bolt to the gas system. In single shot mode, the latch on the bolt handle was able to be pushed in, unlocking the bolt from the gas system and allowing manual operation of the gun as a straight-pull bolt-action rifle. In semi-automatic mode, a switch was turned into the bolt handle, locking the latch in the outward position and affixing the bolt to the gas system.
General Mondragón would display his rifle design to the Mexican government, and while military and government officials showed interest in the design, Mexico at the time did not have the industrial capabilities needed to mass-produce the gun. This forced General Mondragón to look outside of Mexico for assistance. Eventually, the Swiss firearms manufacturer SIG would acquire the rights and patents to the Mondragón rifle around 1908, and would begin production in 1910.
The Mexican Army would order approximately 4000 Mondragón rifles to be shipped over from SIG. However, the order ended up being cancelled following the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution, resulting in only about 300-1000 M1908 rifles making it over to Mexico. Following this, SIG attempted to market the Mondragón rifle internationally. They found little success until 1915, when Germany bought most of the remaining rifles from the Mexican contract. The German air force issued them to their aerial observers for use against enemy planes. Once military aircraft began to be outfitted with machine guns, however, this plan fell apart and the rifle was soon after pulled from combat use in 1917.
